This song was my most obvious attempt to re-create the music I loved twenty years ago. Velvet Underground influenced, feminist rock n roll. I was reflecting on the idea of the alpha male and how often the attempt to create a female hero equivalent just put traditional male attributes to some sex object. The unimpressed but impressive women I know are more complex and very different from each other. They can be “bad ass”, sure, but they can also just want a home, be problematic or they can be meek and uncompetitive until it counts. Brian again stepped in to help with this tune, playing both the acoustic guitar while my wrist was broken and creating that lead riff material that makes me swoon.

I heard Mink DeVille's "Spanish Stroll" and thought it was the most blatant Velvet Underground rip off ever. Maybe that wasn't a liability in 1977, but here in the 2020's so naked a reference I found exciting. With "The Alpha Fem", I wanted to be naked and bare with the influence and sound like a VU rip off.
