about

An instrumental piece written on a mandula that Brian gifted me, which was gifted to him by the former bassist of our old band, who had it gifted to her by its maker. Who will I end up gifting it to? Time will tell! FYI, a madula is like a mandolin, but a fifth lower. The same as a violin and viola. The instrument I have is not a great one, but it stays in tune. I just gifted an actual mandolin to a friend because it didn't hit that high mark of what I needed from an instrument. It's funny to me that I've become the sort of musician who NEEDS to play a very good instrument to make music. In my mind, I'm still a dirty shirt punk kid, plucking on any stringed instrument I could. But no. I've become an actual musician. Embarrassing.

The piece was surprisingly easy to write and record. I developed a weird scale that has two chromatic runs baked into to it and took inspiration from an arrangement of "Miserlou" that a klezmer band I played bass for a minute in had. To the curious, the scale is C, Db, Eb, Gb, G, Ab, Bb. I cheated a little in this song. I don't follow that scale when I want to make chords. I sped the whole recording up, making me sound much better at tremolo playing than I am. I also recorded the rain, breaking the "one instrument, one vocal line" rule for this project. Does atmosphere count? Heh heh heh. I'm a cheater. Make a boundary than push at it.

Jemmy Joe Olympia, Washington

Jemmy Joe is a twin. An unreliable narrator. An acquired taste. Mixing traditional folk, jazz harmonic taste and a sardonic optimism, Jemmy Joe has been making music for no one his entire, god damn adult life. Though he has very little to show for it, it is the train he is on and will not be jumping off any time soon. ... more
